SIM Hijacking

The TVA channel's JE TV Show of January 17, 2025, seemed very interesting to me. It addressed several cybersecurity issues such as SIM Hijacking (SIM card swap scam), identity theft, the risks of bypassing 2FA, the responsibilities of the Internet Service Provider, the role of the telecom regulator, etc.

The SIM card swap scam allows criminals to take control of your phone number and access your personal accounts, which often results in rapid and significant financial losses.

The statistics about Canada are also alarming. According to Project Disrupt 2024, at least 1,500 cell phone accounts have been compromised in Canada. This case illustrates how vulnerable cell phone users are to this type of attack. So what to do:

  • Increase your cyber vigilance by implementing the following measures:

  •  Behave responsibly online.

  •  Beware of phishing messages or calls asking for personal information.

  •  Use unique and strong passwords and secure your mobile phone provider account.

  •  Set up alerts associated with your bank account or mobile phone operator.

  •  Use authentication applications instead of using a text message as a 2nd factor.

  •  Etc..
